HOAX: This Facebook post offering iron sheets as Mabati Rolling Mills is fraudulent

This Facebook post from a page using Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM) branding and claiming to offer iron sheets is a HOAX.

The post claims to offer “quality roofing at affordable prices” and invites potential customers to place their orders via a WhatsApp number provided. The post also claims free delivery is offered countrywide.

The account’s transparency section shows it was created on 2 July 2026, a red flag, as impostor pages tend to be new.

But does the account belong to MRM?

A search on Facebook established that the authentic Facebook page uses the name Mabati Rolling Mills and is verified.

Unlike the account under investigation, the authentic page was created on 30 January 2015. Another key distinction is that the former is an account, while the latter is a Facebook page. Businesses and organisations typically use Facebook pages rather than personal accounts.

A review of the official Facebook page found no such post, and the genuine phone number differs from the one in the post under investigation.

There was also no record of the offers on MRM’s website.

PesaCheck contacted MRM on X (formerly Twitter) and established that the post is from a fraudulent account.

“The page is not affiliated to us in any way,” MRM responded.

PesaCheck examined a Facebook post from an account using Mabati Rolling Mills branding and claiming to offer iron sheets and found it to be a HOAX.

PesaCheck is East Africa’s first public finance fact-checking initiative. It was co-founded by Catherine Gicheru and Justin Arenstein, and is being incubated by the continent's largest civic technology and data journalism accelerator: Code for Africa. It seeks to help the public separate fact from fiction in public pronouncements about the numbers that shape our world, with a special emphasis on pronouncements about public finances that shape government’s delivery of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) public services, such as healthcare, rural development and access to water / sanitation. PesaCheck also tests the accuracy of media reportage. To find out more about the project, visit pesacheck.org.

PesaCheck is an initiative of Code for Africa, through its innovateAFRICA fund, with support from Deutsche Welle Akademie, in partnership with a coalition of local African media and other civic watchdog organisations.
